GET A JOB!!!

The Washington Post has weighed in on Metro's consideration of allowing street acts into our sacred tunnels. The scoop was picked up by Post Staff Writer Lena H. Sun. Sun notes that the guy she spoke to in favor of the proposal, Metro Interim General Manager Dan Tangherlini, listens to "reggae, Johnny Cash, and everything in between."*

T. Dana Kauffman, who represents Fairfax County on the Metro Board, is "lukewarm" to the idea. He listens "mostly to news but occasionally turns to light jazz and oldies."

Alright, Lena H. Sun. I see what you're doing here. You're making it seem like the "cool" guys want street musicians while the old fogeys who listen to *gasp* the news are trying to spoil everyone else's good time.

Of course, the musical tastes of the people who have opinions on this are totally irrelevant to the story. I listen to Iron Maiden, Fiona Apple, and Led Zeppelin. Do my tastes have anything to do with my opinion on the subject? Of course not. It wouldn't make a difference if I listened to polka, Journey, and/or go-go. The only reason to mention these asinine details is to make one side of the debate look undesirable.

Nice try, Lena H. Sun. I know it's an obnoxious Washington stereotype to throw around accusations of media bias, but you have been caught red-handed.

*"Reggae, Johnny Cash, and everything in between"? Does anyone know what frat Dan Tangherlini belongs to?

Dude, I'm a rocker through and through. I like, in this order, Skynard, AC DC, Def Lepperd, Van Halen--not Vaaaan Hagar!

  2. Rusty, can you just go off topic for one blog entry and just rant about the greatness that is Iron Maiden?

Oh, and your last entry was quoted in the Express today.

If this is approved, I hope the stations fill with political (or "artistic") demonstrations against the performances.

P.S. My metro train was evacuated today making me late for work-- THANKS METRO. *Sigh* If only there was some grungy hippie reading bad poetry at my station to comfort me.

    Hey Randy,

I thought of your snarky blog the other day on the subway when the train suddenly jerked to a halt and people flew into each other.

Some dork (with red hair) says, "Ahhhh, I love Metro."

I immediately suspected a DC blogger. He had called an "audible blog." I didn't know you could do that.

i can't tell if you don't hate d.c. as much as your predecessor, or if you're less likely to blame the city for a crap life (not saying you have a crap life, but james clearly did). but you manage to be almost as entertaining with only half the bitterness. congrats, kind of.

The musicians in DC are the most dreadful I have ever heard. A city of bureaucrats does not have the joyous musical atmosphere of New York or Boston. Keep those giftless fools out of the subway.

I wonder if Krystal Koons will play the skin flute at one of the Metro stops...

Bashing Johnny Cash in favor of Iron Maiden? Hmmmm...

What tunnels are we speaking of here anyway? The shitbox system doesn't even have a tunnel to connect the two Farraguts.

Who cares if some dude is playing the fucking tuba at Metro Center? And why does some turdhead who likes reggae and Johnny Cash get to decide? Step off, shitnose.

  11. I am not saying that Johnny Cash is superior or inferior to Iron Maiden because that would be a ridiculous comparison.

Skin flute? I though Krystal Koons was a girl. He or she is definately a member of the creative swearing club.

You... assflag. Don't call ME a buttfoot!

    Hey Rusty,

I'd like to give a shoutout to "Bedpan" in Bethesda. I don't know if you permit shoutouts.

  14. Hey, I like a nice quiet commute as much as anyone, but I think it's silly that we have to have a rule about this, when most other metro systems don't. I gotta admit, I'm with the performers on this one, even if it's asian hymn-singing guy.

  15. Oh and PS -- hiring people in to do the job that hymn-singing guy can do . . . now that's just silly.

You listen to Fiona Apple? And you dare criticize others? Loser.

asian hymn singing guy is a korean. koreans are the bible bashing nuts of asia. you will seldom find chinese or japanese-origin people who engage in the fanatical hymn singing and churchgoing that koreans do.

when i used to live in silver spring and commuted to downtown dc (i'm in phoenix now), my fave was the bagpipe player who stood at the top of the metro. the uplift of air from the escalator etc would always suggest that at any moment his kilt would lift and he'd finally settle the question of what lies beneath a kilt.

tangent aside, my experience riding the paris metro over the years has shown that for every very talented musician i encountered playing for cash, there were usually two or three others playing dreadfully on little electric keyboards. since i suspect paris has more talented musicians per capita than DC, i daresay the ratio of good to really lame might be more like 1:6 or 1:9. THAT would be painful.

why doesn't metro get some of our underrated local musicians to perform. not crappy buskers, but legit artists who call dc home.

try bands like garland of hours, the evens, death by sexy, bob mould, deep dish, thievery corporation, etc. hell, dave grohl is from around here. why not have an entire damn festival underground?

Why are they trying to get musicians? They shoudl just let it be known that they won't drive away musicians from the subway and they'll come on their own.

I too love the bagpipe player as well as the Asian guy who plays an instrument that I'm not familiar with and the orchestra players that used to play at Friendship Heights.

I'm met every friday by the asian violin guy on my way to work. All I can think about is how his instrument is made with cat skin. Seriously, Mr. Whiskers.
