What's That Sound?

So, a question to all my readers living in Mount Pleasant. Specifically, those living along 16th street by Park, Lamont, and Irving.

Has anyone else noticed an extremely high pitched whistle going off for an extended period of time? Not like a referee whistle. More like a dog whistle that's just low enough for humans to hear it. Almost like a tea kettle.

Because, Jesus Christ, it's loud and it's annoying. It's getting in the way of my enjoyment of Lifetime movies and Project Runway and that shit won't stand.

(Ed note: By the way, what was up *SPOILER ALERT* with Ricky winning yesterday? What the Hell? A denim tube dress? Ugh. The judges thought that was better than Christian's, dare I say it, fierce motorbiker from Hell or Rami's gorgeous dress with zipper trim? I mean, really? God I hate Ricky and his stupid effing hats. Have a cry and throw yourself off a bridge, you talentless hack.)

If anyone has any idea what it is, please give me a heads-up. I want to know the appropriate place to lodge a complaint; a complaint that will surely go ignored. I suppose I could give the newfangled 3-1-1 a try.

  1. It's not really a whistle... It reminds me of the weekly tornado siren tests in Ohio. It sounds like this, but it wavers less. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-nGr534eP4

  2. I was so upset with Ricky's win! I couldn't believe I sat through the whole hour to see that crybaby's mediocre dress win.

  3. It could be a Lifetime movie rape whistle.

  4. Although, Christian's outfit made the chic look crazy disproportionate! Oh Rami, oh how i loved your dress. And you don't even cry. sniff sniff.
ummmm, what was the question? No, never heard the whistle. We Columbia Heights residents live in beautiful silence (yeah right!)
So are you going to have a Project Runway, Mt. Pleasant-Col Heights party or what?

  5. They were rewarding Ricky for not sucking like he usually does, as opposed to actually doing a fantastic piece. That really makes me angry. Read Tim's blog...he has the dope.

  6. I hear that in College Park at least once a week. It's a vague, high pitched vaccuuming sound...I live right next to the train tracks so I always wonder if maybe someone's sweeping the tracks but it goes on for HOURS in the middle of the night and it's so distracting. If it's the Metro, they need to get their shit together and realize that people actually live around here and like their sleep.

  7. Regardless of how you may feel about Ricky's win, I think we can all agree that Victorya was the person that needed to go. Also, are you going to blog about the DC porn scandal? It seems too good to pass up.

  8. I saw the end of the show and I went in and puked on my jeans a bit in protest, and then I was still angry so I puked on some lingerie.

A similar noise was all the heppablep on the Adams Morgan listserve a while back- it turned out to be a ventilation unit that got clogged. I believe DC law says that if you can unclog such a unit and find the person responsible for the shoddy upkeep, you're allowed to force him to eat the clog as you do a little jig around him.

  9. Fans in the METRO grates are put on at night when the crew are doing work for ventilation purposes. They emit that awful whine you are hearing. I had the same problem in NW where I live. I shot off an e-mail to METRO and they turned them off. Good luck!

  10. The Columbia Heights Metro is two or three blocks from there. That could be it.

I mean, of course it's Metro. It's always the fucking Metro.

  11. 1, did you see how SHORT Ricky is?
2, Christian drives me up the f'ing wall, with that fierce hair and all.
3, he only won b/c michael kors was like 'oh look you styled your chick after amy whinehouse, i love a good crack whore'. but none of the outfits were really great anyway. (uhm, sorry, venting!)

  12. I believe it may be something called Whistle Tips. An attachment put on a muffler than makes a high pitched whistle. Do a search on Youtube for Whistle Tips and watch the hilarious video...it's all about the wooooooooo-wooo!

  13. Every week I scream at my TV when they let Ricky stay!! I wasn't a huge fan of any of the outfits this week, though Christian's pants were pretty sweet. But at least Victorya's gone, she was annoying.

  14. I love it that Ricky and Christian are still pitted against one another. That's good television. They weren't going to let Christian win that one because they need to set up a good bitchslappin' in next week's epi.

I'm glad Victorya is gone. I have always wanted to punch her in the throat -- stupid twitchy face.

  15. I can't find the news article on it, but in Saint Louis's paper, they ran a story on Mount Pleasant and other places that install these devices that emit a low whistling noise which only teenagers and young people can hear. Basically, it's to prevent loitering.

I am not making this up, I just can't find the article.

  17. Did the sound go away? I'm interested in an update. Drudge has two articles on the kid-hating "Mosquito" today. There's even a picture. The good news is that if you wait another year or two or five, your hearing will probably start to go and the sound will go away.
