An announcement

Due to a variety of reasons, I must report that M@ is no longer a contributor at why.i.hate.dc.

While this site has never purported to be a serious hard-hitting news outlet, a certain tradition was established by the previous writers. James F. and Rusty both spent years building a considerable audience for this site. Their posts were biting, timely and often hilarious. They took on some serious (and not so serious) issues, and made their marks on the D.C. blogosphere.

I fell into the role of administrator of this site when other people lost interest. I've never been one for censorship, and I generally agree it's a good thing to rile people up. Usually that gets people thinking. However, there's no place for a lot of the things that have been posted here. It's regrettable that they appeared on this site at all.

For those readers who are interested in reading M@'s thoughts, please visit his personal site. This site is about illustrating the problems (big and small) and annoyances of D.C. It's not an extension of a personal blog. No one is perfect, and it's undeniable that our personal lives will bleed into our posts here. However, the moment that this site becomes associated with rape fantasy and all of the other bizarre circumstances surrounding some posts, is the moment something has to be done.

The Internet is, after all, serious business. But really, no sarcasm tag here, that's not cool. While this site hasn't always been the epitome of perfection, there are just some things that are not acceptable.

  1. Well, Dave, it was time for me to quit this blog anyhow since I'm currently trying to leave the city. I made a New Year's resolution to leave by the end of the summer and I'm trying like hell to keep it.

I find it interesting that now would be the time for you to object to any content after seven months of vitriolic posting and commenting--but I'm OK with it. I'm literally moving on....

Good luck w/ writing posts about Metro and Fenty and getting quoted in the Examiner. And thanks for the link. I'll remember you all when I'm in a better place (like, New York City, not heaven)....

  4. Oh that is seriously funny, so people can comment whatever nasty, horrible shit they want here and you refuse to censor that (or just turn off anon comments)?

But M@'s posts are too much?

Both this blog and you Dave are are fucking fake.

  5. Posts are reflective of the site and its writers. Comments are not. THere are plenty of sites that allow all types of comments without deleting them. That's basic common sense. Look at any site with unmoderated comments.

Thank you! God, he was an awful writer and his posts were just stupid. Total freakshow. I really liked this blog and I hope someone (who doesn't have their own blog and therefore does not consider this a priority) can get it back on track.

"Good luck w/ writing posts about Metro and Fenty and getting quoted in the Examiner."

Umm... yeah. Isn't this blog called "why.i.hate.dc?" Unlike the grease spray that leaks from your beautiful mind, all three of the things you mention have to do with DC.

There are forums for the stuff you write, though I'm fairly surprised that you would apparently not have a problem with the fact that your vastly unpopular and offensive prose would be associated with your identity and even a photograph.

You should have an interesting time finding a new job. Even if your potential employer doesn't recognize you immediately, is there anyone who doesn't do some basic google stalking before hiring someone?

  10. @Anon, then why do you read this blog instead of rape fantasy blogs?

Always amazed at people who read shit they don't like to read, and then complain about it.

Of course I don't understand people who cut themselves and/or put cigarettes out on their arms, but hey that's me.

I love how the anoymous fucking coward call M@ a pussy for having comment moderation enabled when they don't have their own fucking identity enabled.

  13. The anonymous fucking coward isn't posting a bunch of racist sexist shit on a blog.

  14. Firstly, I just have a general comment... I honestly don't get this blog, especially since the people that write it all seem to live in effin' Arlington or Friendship Heights. If I lived in those parts of DC, I too would dream of NYC. Jesus. You don't hate "DC," you hate suburban blight and homogeneaity, which you support by living in those places. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy and is a bit, well, boring. Grow a personality.

But...I must say, kuddos for getting rid of m@ the asshat. Rape jokes, fantasies, etc. are never funny except to people that have probably already date-raped someone 'cause they thought drunk enough to say "yes"=consent... His comments perpetuate the rape culture we live in, which is so systemized "edgy" kids like m@ think they are so AWESOME by going along with the flow. m@, you are not Don DeLillo. Good luck living in NY with other people who desparately want to be seen as original and end up being all the same.

  15. @Elizabeth:

I don't live in the suburbs, and actually I don't even hate the suburbs. The things I hate about DC, and comment on the most, have nothing to do with the suburbs. I live in the city, have for years, and get pissed at the mismanagement and all of that. I don't hate living in DC--I hate the things that make it hard to enjoy living here. I want to comment on them and get people thinking. That's my goal here.

  16. @Dave,

Well, admittedly I only check out this blog periodically as it's tone is a bit meh, but in the past (Rusty and others) seemed to complain a lot about the types of people who lived here, how there's nothing to do, how one group wants one thing and I don't like it, blah blah blah. So, if you're for helping make DC a better place to live, then good for you. I'm all about that... I just worry that (and correct me if I'm wrong)"make it hard to enjoy living here" = not enough stuff that overly educated, middle-class people like to do.

But again, I'm a tepid reader, so if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and I'm willing to give it all a second chance. Your tone in the comments is to be commended for its unsnarkiness and sincerity.

  17. not easy to make a point with glaringly bad grammar: it's tone = its tone.

  18. I found his posts a striking contrast between skilled prose and bigoted malarkey, but he wasn't writing for me, of course. Those in his intended audience, I wish you the best of luck on the author's own site. I genuinely think his voice is distinctive and strong enough that being part of this blog diluted both brands. Now that they're separated, people can choose one, the other, or both, as they prefer, rather than being forced to take one or the other as before.

The first comment, M@'s "You can't fire me because I quit anyway" post is hilarious. Beyond that I think what Nick N said is about the best thing I've seen. M@'s voice just didn't fit with WIHDC.
