Two Notes

1. The Dupont South Metro escalators were broken again today. I'm glad to see so much forward progress being made at such a busy station. I can't believe it's that much to ask to have just one working escalator going in the right direction. (The "right direction" is whichever way I happen to be going.) If this continues, an injury is inevitable. Maybe a heart attack. Maybe a dizzy spell that results in a fall and a domino effect taking out dozens of commuters. Who knows? But it will suck. And WMATA will be held accountable.

2. So, yeah. More bad things happening in Georgetown. Can Chief Ramsey declare a crime super-emergency? If I need to buy my baby a diamond ring, I'll buy it beyond the District limits thank you very much.

  1. I particularly like how the news anchors are adopting the hip-hop style of speech when they describe such things.

The criminals were described by the white anchor on Fox as "thugs." Made me laugh. Thugs stealing the bling-bling.

Lots of stereotypes. That poor fellow who was found w/ fatal wounds to his head in D.C. the other day was found behind the wheel of a... Cadillac Escalade.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas about the root cuases of this uptick in crime.... Is this a sign that the economy is tanking? I have no idea....

If you're scared, you can mail-order the cubic zirconia. :)

  2. That guy in the video looked black.

    I'm just sayin'.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Of course he was. On the one hand, I wondered whether "thugs" was a code word for that designation. Having written news scripts before, I'm always looking out for biases, whether or not I agree w/ their opinions.

As researchers tell us, the news is a social construct, not necessarily a reflection of an over-arching reality.

But yeah, the video was crystal clear.

  4. And I understand how black people might be annoyed by your comment, anonymous. It's like militants or criminals anywhere who blend in with local civilian populations, the IRA in northern Ireland, for one.

Now, Hezbollah is doling out millions to compensate some of the Lebanese who lost their homes in the bombing.

If I had to live in Adams Morgan/Mount Pleasant again, I'd get a gun.

  5. Uptick in crime? Do some fucking google searching next time before you make a ridiculous comment like that. Most LIFETIME residents of the District would much rather have the crime the way it is right now as opposed to the way it was in the 1980's. Today's DC is Disneyland. Fucking out of town suburbanites move into an urban environment and are surprised by the daily occurrence of crime. Stupid fuckers. Newbies. Get the hell out of my town!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Couldn't agree more. I mean, GOD, what right do I have to worry about crime in the city I live in- unless I've been living here for 20 or 30 years? None whatsoever. So think about that, newbies, before you start suggesting that greater police presence and improved urban infrastructure might be possible responses to current crime situations.

Also, uptick suggests a rise from a previous lower percentage. Maybe not 1980's style, but hey, an uptick is an uptick.

    Ass.

  7. You are a newbie you have no rights. Newbies had better pray and hope it does not go back to 1980's style with 1991 riots etc...
Newbies are all gonna be fucked.
Moving to DC to show off to all of your friends back home that you live in ethnic diverity with culture. Idiot out of towners. You have not seen shit yet. Uptick up your ass bitch.

  9. This is the dumbest comment thread I have ever read.

  10. Maybe a dizzy spell that results in a fall and a domino effect taking out dozens of commuters?

This has already happened years ago before you moved here douchebag. Hopefully next time the domino effect will take out dozens of transplants who work at non profits. Better yet, interns from the hill or those who wear their badges of honor when outside of the office to show off to everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  11. So, what you're saying is Metro still hasn't learned its lesson?

    ReplyDelete
  12. MADONNA CAN GO TO HELL AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED

    SHE'S A DICK

    ReplyDelete
  13. i always think it's funny that people who have been here for five years suddenly call themselves "DC natives" and then proceed to call everyone else "transplants". Nobody is from DC because if you were, you'd have died along time ago from the polluted drinking water.

    Oh, and fuck metro.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Metro has always sucked. Do not be fooled by their latest customer service campaign. I prefer the transit system in Boston. Metro will always suck. That will never change.

  15. See what happens when Marion Barry has too much time on his hands? He starts leaving snarky blog comments.

Went for a run through the U Street/Shaw/Howard Univ. area last night. Guess what? The newbies appear to be taking over. Lots of gentrification going on around there. Maybe once the city has a more prosperous tax base it can fund the improvements it needs. In the meantime, I'll be cowering with the other honkies in Alexandria.

  16. Lots of gentrification going on around there. Maybe once the city has a more prosperous tax base it can fund the improvements it needs.

    This will never happen.

Unfortunately years of gentrification can all go down in ruins and up in flames in just under 24 hours. Personal belongings all looted away just like what happened in New Orleans.

Good luck trying to claim it all back with your insurance.

Whiteys get out now. Only a fool would want to stay.

I'm well aware of the history of D.C. in the 1980s even though I didn't grow up here, ya moron. I watched it on t.v.

    Jesus H. Fucking Christ Almighty.

You act like that's priveleged information that only you have. Wow. I don't need to do any Google searching. I'm familiar with the economics and conspiracy theories of the crack epidemic.

Get out of your town? Get out of my country.

  18. You are a newbie you have no rights. Newbies had better pray and hope it does not go back to 1980's style with 1991 riots etc...

We'd just leave you here behind. Or buy our own guns. A lot of us "suburbanites" own guns, you know. If it ever came to that, I'd be packing like a mother.... You won't catch me unprepared.

This WAS a dumb comment thread, on all sides. Yawn.

  19. History: the Italian neighborhood in Baltimore didn't have many problems with rioting during the late sixties.

Why? Neighborhood men stood atop rooftops with rifles. Their neighborhood was skipped over....

    ReplyDelete
  20. Cut it out. This is stupid. Violence, guns, race, riots? All I did was mention another Metro fuck-up and a robbery in G-town.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well that's because the Italians in the late 60's were much more street wise and were not living in the pussified 2000's.

Some transplants got balls though. I will give them that. Walking around the city streets alone at 2AM and 3AM in the morning. Shit you will never catch me doing that. That's almost like an open invatation for getting robbed. Fuck that. This whitey right here knows better.

    ReplyDelete
  22. This is what this shithole does to people. Brings out the worst in everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. LOL

    YOU AINT LYIN

ITALIANS, JEWS & THE IRISH SURE DID KNOW HOW TO KICK PLENTY OF ASS BACK IN THE DAY

    LMAO

BEST BELIEVE I DONT BE MESSIN OR FOOLIN AROUND WITH NO IRISH STREET GANGS BACK IN THE DAY

    SAME WITH THE ITALIANS

THEY STOMP THE SHIT OUT OF US BACK THEN NO DOUBT

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rusty,

Quit you damn whitey whining. You whine about violence, and you're surprised when people bust out with violence and race? This is DC. Violence and Race are in the water.

"waa waa waa, why can't everybody get along like here in NW. Waaa waa."

As for the robbery and shooting? Back before bling was around, people called people who did this thugs. Gangsters. N'er do wells. You get my point.

If I wanted to have a 3rd World Equivalent Police Force, I'd move to Kinshasa or Freetown.

I second the comment about Little Italy. It's called "force protection" and "perimiter security." See the line? That's your side.

    F this.

    AngryDCF#@k

  25. Italians are still gangsta. Want proof? Just take a look at this kid right here.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_RzJc_nc94

Unfortunately, you are not going to find many Italians like that in present day DC anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Rusty,

Don't quit your whining. I swear, your blog gets me through the workday.

I went to Friendship Heights yesterday to grab dessert at the Cheesecake Factory with a friend. I ended up burning all the calories I would later consume beforehand by climbing up the broken escalator from the Metro stop.

    I feel your pain.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I was actually wondering what would happen if I toppled down the escalators because of loss of breath or something.

    Could I sue WMATA?

    ReplyDelete
  28. If you wanted to sue, I guess Washington could claim sovereign immunity, but that would be totally bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm an Irish whitey and I know plenty of New Jersey Italians and I agree about the old-fashioned ethnic whiteys not backing down.

We need to return to that more. Who says we're weaker?

My dad, who was a boxer, has a favorite story:

Walking back from an acting class in NYC one day with a pretty black woman, he noticed a black man staring at him. He gave it right back, prepared for a street fight. Later he found out he probably wouldn't have one that fight.

The man's name? Casius Clay. The point is my dad was old school Irish and was prepared to fight the man who would become the greatest. Stupid maybe, but that's how we USED to be.

Now we're too good for that. We all have lawyers.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anon,

I'm certainly not going to mess with Gino the Ginny! Wow. What a unit!

I might have gotten a little carried away. My black friends say I act (and dress) like a pimp....

    ReplyDelete
  31. But the District is only part of the transit authority....

  34. What the hell?I'm gonna hope some of these posters aren't actually Black.

    Disturbed Black woman

    ReplyDelete
  35. I know. Most black people I know are just as concerned about crime. They don't get offended by anyone sharing information or concerns about the subject.

I can see how you might get offended if your grandmother's doing time for cocain, but.... otherwise chill.
