Ugh

This was my graduation song. The class before me had Green Day's "Good Riddance." The classes after me were stuck with Eve 6's "Here's to the Night." How unfortunate for them.

Anyways, that opening lyric keeps sticking in my craw.

And so we talked all night about the rest of our lives/
Where we're gonna be when we turn 25

Well, today is my big plunge into the 2-5. Or, as my Dad calls it, the Big 1/4. According to Vitamin C, I should be reflecting on the past seven years and thinking of where I was and where I'm headed.

Man, I need a drink.

Also, fuck off Vitamin C. You were 30 when you recorded that song. I hope you're enjoying your ill-gotten royalties.

  1. Your graduation song was "The Graduation Song"? Your HS didn't expect its pupils to think at all, did it.

  2. Hey! Happy Birthday and stuff. I'm feeling okay about 25, kind of.

Is the graduation song the same one they play at the prom? I think we almost got Nirvana's "Rape Me" voted in, but the student council vetoed it, for whatever reason.

  3. We didn't have an official graduation song. Nothing voted on or anything like that. I just meant the song that was saturating the airwaves during May and June of 2001.

We did vote on class song. Unfortunately my classmates selected "Stayin Alive" by Wyclef.

My vote, and I say this with great embarrassment, was Dammit by Blink-182 ("well I guess this is growing up") It was disqualified for profanity.

  5. We voted for our class song to be the "Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats, which ruled. Especially since we graduated in 2002.

  6. Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynryd. Class of '02. I grew up in the sticks.

  7. Closing Time woulda been a good one.

  8. Brandon, the original or the remix where there's some dude spelling the word "safety" in the background.

    Both choices are ideal.

And there's nothing wrong with Free Bird. Especially the 12 minute live version recorded in Atlanta.

  9. My class milked that wretched overplayed Green Day tripe as well. I would have preferred Vitamin C.

  10. Fuck you- I know exactly when you graduated. The year before you had Vitamin C, you had Here's the Night, just like me. If you want to introduce Vitamin C, that's fine. But don't lie.

  11. Ack ack ack ack ack. Nothin' like blatantly capitalizing on teens' overwrought sense of newness. I hated that song from the second I heard it.

I don't remember if I had an official graduation song. I liked to think "1979" was it, since that was when half of us were born.

  12. Happy quarter-life crisis. The class before mine had "Good Riddance" as well, and I think Mike R. is right, because The Graduation Song came out during my senior year, which was 2000.

Heh. Hoorah for oversentimental teenagers, thinking graduation is some kind of massive event.

  14. I was very upset when I turned 23.

"Nobody likes you when you're 23."

Not only does it mean I'm old, it means that I've shared something in common with that dude from Sugar Ray.

  15. Dearest Mike Rose,

Them's the facts. Here's To The Night and Graduation came out around the same time. I'm sorry your sorry New Jersey public school picked the wrong tune.

  16. "nobody likes you when you're 23"? That's Blink 182, not Sugar Ray. I should know, I'm 23.

  17. The class before me had "The Graduation Song;" whereas mine tastefully picked "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" which you may recognize from Dirty Dancing or the Sandals vacation commercials.

  18. Enjoy 25, Rusty. It's the last year you can comfortably feel that you're still solidly in your 20's. 26 and 27 are when you'll say you're in your "mid 20's", and 28 and 29 are when you'll you're "still in your 20's". Then 30 will hit and you'll officially no longer be considered youthful in any way, shape or form.

    /Still in my 20's

  19. ick. This post made me feel old. Damn 28, I feel my youth slipping, slipping, slipping away. 25, still a baby.

  20. Yeah, that was my class song too, and we did actually vote it in. It made me gag then and still does.

I note that I went to a junior high that went up to 9th grade. Our class song was The Verve Pipe's "The Freshmen". (Never mind that most of the class had no idea what it was about.) We were terribly creative and original, yes.
