Back in November I mentioned that there was a certain newspaper in DC that I would never link to on this site again. Well, that rag has dedicated this week's front page to Late Night Shots. It publishes offensive posts from their increasingly boring comment threads. It has the author crash LNS events at Smith Point. Real fantastic hands-in-the-mud journalism.
Sorry guys, but you're about a year late to the party. That's a social offense even worse than mistaking loafers for boating shoes. My first LNS mention on this site was on June 1, 2006. Wonkette picked up on it soon after. My first Smith Point crash was in November (where I finally met the very polite, affable, and legendary Reed Landry). After their Valentine's party I stopped giving a shit. I'm not the only one. Wonkette hasn't published a "Last Week's Shots" in forever.
I noted that a good number of the posts published today were in Wonkette first. I would be furious if I were them. It's easy to write a cover story when a good deal of the research has already been done for you.
No one cares about LNS anymore. Just like no one cares about this shitty and increasingly irrelevant paper.

but still you write about it. Why don't you write about the weirdly awesome and exhausting Smashing Pumpkins show...that's right you didn't get to go.

Well, she has an T as one initial, and she’s not one of the most outward LNSers, but she’s met him before, and used to swoon over him. Until he made enemies of most of her pals. Ask him. Ask him!

I just read that and left a response. I have no idea what those people are talking about.
ReplyDeleteRusty, you are a 24 year old virgin. No one cares what you think about the local party scene or how you feel about Internet message board discussions involving people who are capable of communicating beyond the confines of cyberspace.
ReplyDeleteThat last comment found its way onto a LNS thread. The irony is noted.
ReplyDeleteYeesh. The LNS mention really brings out the vitriol and personal attacks.
ReplyDeleteI wonder who could be so riled up about it...
Pot....Kettle....Black. The blogs and low quality rags have been spewing nothing but bile toward lns since its inception. I don't recall any people on lns ever showing up at the black cat to do some sort of expose. You all have been borderline obsessed with them for nearly a year now. The notion that they are the ones expressing vitriol toward you is pretty laughable.
ReplyDeleteRecipe to write a shitty WCP article:
ReplyDelete1. Use first person. It’s ‘edgy’ and covers up for poor journalism and writing skills.
2. Write [about] really awful sexist and racist things.
3. Take up a ‘hipster outsider’ role so that you can seem critical of said sexist/racist things, but be sure to still give them plenty of space and attention. Do not challenge them in any real way.
4. Publish lots of comments that girls are sluts, but make sure they are quotes so you don’t get associated with them. Act like guys behaving this way is somehow news worthy in any way.
DUDE...get a grip. City paper rocks...not to mention LNS isnt that bad. Why you so bitter?
ReplyDelete@fuck it all: that's almost LSS's magic formula! She just leaves out step 1...
ReplyDeleteCity paper rocks
ReplyDeleteWritten like someone who's never lived in any other real city before.
The funny part is that Rusty would suck ten dicks for a job at the City Paper.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that the hipster crowd is so fascinated with the LNS crowd? I dont believe anyone on LNS would consider infiltrating Wonderland Bar to bait a crunchy vegan to say something absurd, and then write a grossly exaggerated expose.
ReplyDeleteMost at Wonderland would not disrespect a woman like that.
ReplyDeleteLNS dudes, I was (kind of) on your side until some LNSers started throwing around racial epithets and threatening the author.
What on earth is the deal with blasting the always-excellent Washington City Paper? That is very misguided--and literally wrong. Why "literally?" Because the City Paper has consistently, for years now, accurately and insightfully covered local politics, arts, government and community issues in a manner that no one else has covered them. And the paper has broken some stories. And their writers have gained acclaim nationwide. And the City Paper leads the city--over the Post, the Times and all other papers--in terms of LOCAL arts coverage. For years, the City Paper had one of the best, if not THE best, film reviewers in the city. Other arts reviewers, in the areas of books, dance, opera and theater, were worlds better than reviewers elsewhere. The City Paper is an excellent newspaper, and a valuable journalism asset in the Washington, D.C., region.
ReplyDeleteThe City Paper's reviews are almost always contrarian garbage. A fun game to play is to go to Metacritic and see if a film is getting positive or negative reviews. Nine times out of then the WCP critic will go against the tide. That makes the WCP edgier, right?
ReplyDeleteThe WCP published the most misogynistic and hateful piece of writing that I have ever read. It was more offensive than Mein Kampf. Their stories are almost always dedicated to provoking a reaction rather than informing DC's populice. A bunch of drawings of people throwing up on 18th Street passes as news for this shitty paper.
The WCP is good for finding prostitutes. After that, it gets a little dicey.
I'd like to thank Erik Wemple for checking in with his defense of the CP. As for the reasoning behind the LNS cover story, I'm guessing he must be low on grudges this week. Next week I'm sure we'll see a 10,000-word hit piece on the mailman who lost his copy of Douchebag Illustrated.
ReplyDeleteThe washington city paper is crap.
ReplyDeleteThe comics are funny though.
Rust:
ReplyDeleteWhat is this "piece of writing more hateful than Mein Kampf" in the City Paper?! Now I wanna read it asap.

ReplyDeleteRusty is likely referring to the article "Your Unfinished Basement or Mine?" written by Franklin Schneider. In it, Schneider talks about methodically using women for sex, and offers prose like the following: "As I showered in the morning, careful to breathe through my mouth as the red water swirled around the drain, I realized with equal parts relief and trepidation that there was nothing I wouldn’t do in service to my libido."
Search for it on WCP's site.
WTF? being late to the LNS party is lame, but is it really "more offensive than Mein Kampf"?
ReplyDelete"I dont believe anyone on LNS would consider infiltrating Wonderland Bar to bait a crunchy vegan to say something absurd, and then write a grossly exaggerated expose."
ReplyDeleteOf course they would. It's just that they can't find anyone in their ranks brave enough to go to Wonderland. There are people with tattoos and dark skin there, for crissake!!
Ironically enough, I saw a guy there Saturday wearing boat shoes, khakis and a pink polo shirt. I think LNS has sent in a mole!!
I wasn't at Wonderland on Saturday, but I wear all three of the things you just mentioned.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you got your LNS invite. They obviously recruit at the checkout counter at Brooks Brothers.
ReplyDeleteI invited him.
