Expecting an Yglesias Post in 5, 4, 3.....

I'm one of the few people who has actually forgotten how to ride a bike. It's true! I took my little brother's out for a test spin and crashed twice in only a quarter mile. Bicycling is not my strong suit.

But I can see why people really enjoy biking to work. It's healthy for your body, healthy, for the environment, and a great way to avoid the hassles of public transportation.

Unfortunately, this is not the best city to bike to work. I had a roommate who was an avid biker. A forty mile a day type. He said DC was the hardest city to ride in. He's been hit by a car more than once. Do the drivers stop to see if he's ok? Of course not. They just go on their way being selfish little DC pricks without a care in the world. No matter that they could have seriously injured someone. La de daa.

So, I'm unfortunately not surprised to see that a young woman was squashed by a garbage truck in front of the Church of Scientology. The pull quote from Fire and EMS spokesperson Alan Etter is that "the truck just ran completely over her."

The name of the 22-year-old victim hasn't been released. Her family is in my prayers. And, selfish as it is, I also pray that I didn't know her.

Was she an out of town transplant who moved here to try and be more urban but was in unfamiliar territory trying to ride a bike through city traffic as opposed to the rural suburban traffic she was raised around?

  3. Oh no! I've seen two bicycle accidents since I got here less than a year ago. The streets aren't set up for it, and the drivers are really aggressive. It's a bad combo. The funny thing is, people complain about bikes being on the sidewalk. But what do you expect?

  4. they just painted some new bike routes in brookland. we'll see how that pans out...

Another really terrible piece of the puzzle is that this spot was a bike lane. So not only did the driver ignore the bike lane, as most DC drivers do, but he killed someone in the process. If only police spent half as much time giving people tickets for driving like idiots as they do ticketing people for snacking on the metro.

  7. No, 80% of the bikers need to pay fucking attention to what they are doing and obey the traffic laws. And I especially love it when some prick biker gets on Beach Drive, Rock Creek Parkway or the narrow part of Park Road between Klingle & Beach! There are hundreds of miles of bike paths and/or less traveled roads yet the Darwin Award bikers repeatedly choose to get ride bustling two-lane roads and hold up traffic. If you fall into that category, you deserve what happens to you. It's just not safe, or very smart, to bike wherever the hell you want.

    dc douche:

You are a fucking idiot. People bike to work to save money, stay healthy, save the environment, and free up our congested roads. And what do you do? You criticize them and say they deserve what they get. Not everyone can get to work on bike paths, fuckkwad.

It is not the bikers that are rude. It is the drivers, which you are probably one of. You are the epitome of what is wrong with this fucking shithole. Rude, arrogant pricks who think of no one but themselves. That's what this area is all about and why it sucks so bad. The next time you hit a biker, I hope his handlebar goes through your windshield and impales your sorry ass face.

    Transplatally yours,

    nova sux

I second that. DCDUDE, did you completely miss the fact that this biker was IN A BIKE LANE? Or did you ignore it on purpose so you can be the arrogant prick that you are.

Holy mother of god. Hard to believe there are poeple like you in this world.

Go fuck yourself. And you mom, too.

Actually, I have yet to EVER see a biker stop at a stop sign, or consistently follow ANY rules, so often it is the bicyclist being an ass. Most seem to always pick the narrowest and fastest moving roads too, for maximum traffic slowdown.
Plus, it takes two to have an accident. A giant truck to the left slowing down approaching the intersection should have been a clue. One cannot obliviously bike wherever, bike lane or not. Bicyclists can't even win against a car, let alone a truck.

  11. Did I specifically mention the chick that got ran over? No, don't think I did - so get your fucking estrogen level down to a reasonable level. I specifically referenced the "Darwin" bikers on given streets. Fuck you, hope you learn to read for comprehension someday.

And lemme guess, you're a biker. I hope you get ran over tomorrow. Go ride in traffic.....

  14. I'm a biker. Just thought I'd mention that in California, where I'm from, bikers are legally considered pedestrians. So, cars have to yield.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Right. Because bicyclists NEVER run red lights, swerve through traffic, or mow over pedestrians. Some of them are just as bad as the city's most agressive drivers but bikers are dumber because they think they're cars. I'm not saying she deserve to be harmed or was at fault, but the article clearly states that the truck driver had a perfect driving record AND the police didn't see any immediate reason to press charges if ever. So let's not assume that its the driver's fault. The city is horribly designed for all forms of transportation. It's time bikers and DC drivers unite behind thier common enemy: Maryland drivers.

Go the fuck back to California

    You are not wanted here

Nope, I'm a driver; not a biker. A courteous driver. Shame that according to you, all of the "Darwin" bikers must work in places easily accessible from the bike paths. Are you really that fucking stupid? Obviously you are.

And lemme guess, you drive a Hummer.

Well, according to the stories I've seen, there was a green light. He was turning right. She was going straight. Which meant she had the right of way.

    Pricks.

  20. Nova Sux: Oh yeah dickface, I'm sure the bikers are headed to work…riding in 6pm rush hour on the fucking Rock Creek Parkway in their super repulsive little wannabe Lance Armstrong spandex get ups. Furthermore, I think you should take up biking. First trail...I-395.
