Zacarias Moussaoui Gets Life

Well, my earlier prediction was wrong and I couldn't be happier about it. My favorite quote comes courtesy of Peggy Noonan. Noonan really wanted Moussaoui to fry. Anyways, check this baby out:

How removed from our base passions we've become.

Yes, Peggy. That's the point of a trial. To not let base passions have an impact on the result. You fucking idiot.

And, for fun, here's a bunch of reactions from conservatives. A lot of the pro-death penalty arguments are relatively reasonable (well, for conservatives anyways). Then there's this:

Raped first, multiple times, I'm hoping. Not a joke. I do in fact wish him to be gang raped, and then, at some later point, murdered.

Oh, you conservatives are so cute when you're angry.

I like that he has to rot in prison. he doesn't get to go out with a bang but with a whimper. Prison may have three hots and a cot but don't let anyone lie and tell you that's it's a happy place to be.

  3. To be executed by our government would have been his crowning achievement in life. Glad we didn't fufill his fantasies.

Now, if olny Bill O'Reilly would drunk drive into a retaining wall, he would fufill my fantasies.

hey rusty, you stupid fucking dickdrip:

don't compare all conservatives with the dumbass who created the Ace of Spades website. I'm about as conservative as they come, but I didn't want Moussaoui to get the dp.

Ace of Spades is a fucking moron. Moushitty will not be in contact with any other prisoners EVER. 23 hours lockdown daily probably in Colorodo's max facility. One hour recreation SOLO.

Get the facts straight shitnose Spades. Is it really that hard to see that this is a MUCH BETTER punishment for this pile of shit?

On the other hand, if he were gang raped and murdered, I wouldn't be losing any sleep over it.

  8. I don't think I would have cared either way, but the idea of him having to sit in a room ALONE for the rest of his life seems pretty good punishment to me. He will not be given the chance to be a martyr. He will die alone. I have no doubt that is exactly what those jurors were thinking when they chose to give him life in prison rather than the death penalty.

  9. This just proves what we've known all along - that the death penalty system is completely broken. I'm not sure I can think of anyone in the history of the death penalty who's more deserving of harsh treatment, but we still manage to execute people all the time on lesser crimes.

    david,

the severity of a crime is not the only determining factor in whether or not the dp is given.

  11. Conservative -
They ruled that he was guilty, and that he wasn't insane, and, to be honest, neither of things were never really in doubt (it was only a million dollar defense that convinced the jury that he was insane, over even his own testimony). The only other factors are human sympathy, and, yes, the severity of the crime.

    liberal,

Not quite. While I have not been inside the jurors' minds, there are two other factors that could have led to the LWOP decision, rather than death: the fact that executing him could make him a martyr (which I couldn't really care less about), and the fact that death is what he wanted (why I would not have given it to him). Besides, what he will now go through is far worse than death, in most peoples' opinion. The only things I would change about his punishment is that he'd be in the cell for 24 hours a day, instead of 23, and there would be no religious programming piped into his cell via CCTV.

  13. >Besides, what he will now go through is far worse than death, in most peoples' opinion.

If most people thought LWOP was worse than DP, we wouldn't have capital punishment.

And anyway, I'm not even sure these people really do actually want death. They may say they do, but why do you think they use fancy cars for their suicide bombing? These aren't ancient Egyptians, they don't beleive they're going to heaven in the cars, and it would be just as easy to use a crappy car. They like living in style before they die, just like anyone else.

The fact that they go ahead and kill themselves in the name of their beliefs gives me a bit more insight than what kind of car they use.

Please don't put words in my mouth. I didn't say that most people believe LWOP is worse than the dp. I said what THIS GUY IS GOING TO GO THROUGH is worse than death. Most prisoners serving LWOP have all the perks of prison life, to include cable TV, air conditioning, exercise, a social life, an education, a library, decent food, etc. No one with more than seven or eight brain cells could deny that solitary confinement for the next 40 some odd years is worse than just being put out of your misery. And I don't know what gives you the idea that this guy doesn't want to die, unless you are figuring he chickened out of participating in 9/11, which is entirely possible.

If every prisoner on death row were given solitary confinement instead, even I would be in favor of life over death.

I don't think Moussaoui "wanting" death should be a factor in sentencing. The punishment should fit the crime not the person. Or maybe not. Then I can murder several people and just make sure I can convince the jury that I am deathly afraid of a lifetime supply of hot fudge sundaes and fuzzy slippers and that I really want to go to prison. That'll give em hell at the sentencing hearing!

That said, dp was still not the way to go, just not for that particular reason.
