The Patriot Center Needs More ATMs.

I went to the White Stripes show at the Patriot Center on Saturday. It was my first trip to George Mason and I was amazed that they could fit such a big school out in the middle of nowhere.

The show was fine even if the sound was, um, not good. I just wanted to point out that I had never been surrounded by so many dee-bagz in my entire life. It was worse than any frat party or intern fair I had ever attended. Douches everywhere. Bros punching each other and then hugging and saying "I love you, man." I thought that was just a cliche. But it really happens! And if I hear one more asshole propose to Meg White in the middle of "In the Cold, Cold Night" I am going to shoot myself.

My roommate told me that every show she goes to at the Patriot Center is like that. So, what's up? Is this just a coincidence or are GMU students/Fairfax residents super-obnoxious? Or do The White Stripes attract a douchey audience? All theories are appreciated. It was the first time an audience greatly affected my enthusiasm.

And God damn it, if you're lucky enough to be on the floor at a rock concert, fucking move around a little. Nothing is more depressing than seeing hundreds of people just standing there while rock music is being performed. I expect that shit at Fiona Apple and Aimee Mann concerts. But The White Stripes? Really?

  1. Your first mistake was wasting your money and time by going to a White Stripes show.

No one on the floor was moving because their music is BORING and neither of the band members have ANY talent whatsoever. Give me a $50 junk guitar and a ten-year old kid and I'll bet he can learn their entire catalog within a year.

Oh, and most big schools are out in the middle of nowhere.

  3. After the most recent news, I looked forward to your comments about the spree of shootings in DC (despite the fact that every officer on the force was on duty) or perhaps a conspiracy diatribe exposing Metro's plan to eradicate the DC bird population.

But no, you chose to write about your pathetic Saturday night.

Why don't you change the name of this blog to "It's all about ME"?

So you went to see The White Stripes at GMU. WHO CARES?

For someone who claims to have no money, you seem to have no trouble finding ways to throw it away.

Clearly your musical tastes deserve a closer examination. I suggest you stick to whining about Metro.

Hey, Mark. Back off. I'm writing about the birds later. I didn't have time to write anything that involved thinking since I'm kind of busy at work. Not too busy to check my comments of course, but busy enough to prevent me from reading the Post.

I saw Beck at the Patriot Center a year (or two?) ago, and the crowd had a similarly poisonous effect on the experience. It joined the Nissan Pavilion on the list of venues I have vowed to avoid.

If the crowd sucked, then maybe it's because they were all there to see the same sucky band.

    Pot kettle black

It was not always this way. It is just that today's current y generation, most of them do not know how to rock. Mosh pits are all about giving oral and hand relief now as opposed to kicking the shit out of someone.

  13. A. I'd estimate that maybe 2% of the crowd at any given Patriot show is comprised of GMU students and/or Fairfax residents. People go there from all over, especially for a Sat. night show. I'll say there were a bunch of douchebags there because those are the types going out to see the White Stripes.

    B. Why were you "amazed" that a big school is in the middle of nowhere?

I dunno. I've never been to a big school before. One minute I was in a residential neighborhood with small houses and churches and suddenly, boom, campus.

I am amazed by the White Stripe hatred. Their newest album is fantastic.

  15. Hmmmm…and what did you expect exactly out of the crowd as GMU is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy the hell out in suburbia? I saw Depeche Mode there a year or two back. The crowd was pretty eclectic, not what you’re describing; ranged from old timers that were likely 40 when DM first came around, all the way down to sixteen year-old pubescent kids. If you want a more hip crowd I’d suggest staying in DC…..assuming there are actually “hip” people here. Still waiting to see some.

Another thought: maybe the crowd sucked because the White Stripes are overrated and uber-trendy. The concert was likely filled people that buy their rock albums based on “People Magazine” & “Access Hollywood” were there?? That and college students. It is a COLLEGE CAMPUS for Christ’s sakes. What are you bitching for again??

    *yawn*

  16. By the way, I like Fiona Apple. I would see her over the White Stripes anyday. Saw her when she opened for Coldplay (promptly left before Coldplay took the stage). There was at least some movement on the floor. Methinks the White Stripes, and most of their fans, just suck.

The fact that you didn't know that Fairfax county residents are yuppie douchebags is beyond me.

  19. Wow, I mean, I know critical backlash is a bit but... NEITHER white stripes member has any talent? That's a new criticism to me... I mean, say what you will about Meg, but Jack can play some acceptable blues guitar, no? Perhaps I know nothing, but it really seems to me that if Jack and Meg were still playing the RnR instead of the Patriot Center they'd still be (rightfully) adored. I'm honestly pretty surprised that the crowd was quite so twattish, but that's why I never go to NOVA.

  23. Wow, I'm relieved to see I'm not the only person in America who thinks the White Stripes blow. I mean, I just don't get them, I guess.
