Devil's Advocate

Chandra Levy's mother met with Police Chief Cathy Lanier yesterday. The meeting went swimmingly.

Of course Chandra Levy is but one of many murder cases that remains unsolved in the District. Did the new chief meet with the parents of these other victims? I bet the families of these other victims don't have the resources of Levy family. Does excessive media coverage six years ago still mean that Chandra Levy is more important to Chief Lanier than all the other unsolved murders out there?

I guess if you're going to get murdered it doesn't pay if you're an anonymous dude in Southeast DC. It does, however, help if you're a white girl from a well-to-do family who was fucking a Congressman. Lanier's implicit suggestion that Chandra Levy's life and death is more important than countless other unsolved murders in her jurisdiction is disgusting.

  1. This is the greatest blog ever. Makes me long for the 20 years I spent hating my hometown.

  2. It's more important because it's likely that the perpetrator is a powerful person, i.e. the coital Congressman.

  3. I got what you're saying, but it only makes sense if you assume Lanier doesn't meet with family members of other unsolved murder victims. I'd like to think she does, even if the media don't show up.

Maybe she is indifferent to the others, in which case I agree with you.

Didn't they find her bones in Rock Creek Park? Eff.

  4. Even assuming she meets with victims families (which I doubt), she certainly wouldn't be meeting with them six years after the fact.

  5. Yeah, murdered people piss me off too. All they do is use up tax dollars and waste police resources. Go back to Mexico, murdered people.

  6. After being in DC for almost 3 years, I finally found this acclaimed blog (yes, I'm lazy and didn't find time to just google it).

Glad to see you're a sox fan (I'm originally from Worcester, MA). Where ya from?

    Hilarious man. Hilarious.

  8. I can tell you why this meeting happened: the interns mother clearly is working to get the media coverage for herself. Sorry, but the fact that no one fights for media coverage for “SE victims” as you call them does not mean that the same coverage would come IF someone were championing the cause to solve there murder. So “WHHHHHAAAAAAAHHH”, get over it you tits.

And Kurt....bullshit. The individual who killed the intern is not a powerful person. Perhaps you are implying it is Condit? PUH-lease. The American public loves nothing more than seeing it's celebrities/politicians get busted and punished. [Paris Hilton, Bill Clinton anyone?] Fact is the police just must not have the evidence to go for anyone. So shove your f**king conspiracy theories unless you can back them up with something other than the hot air coming from your huge ass.

  9. Didn't you hear? Condit has been punished. They took away his Baskin-Robbins franchise. Ouch.

  11. I'm on board with the Mossad theory and Levy's death:

  12. rusty, you're a self-righteous idiot. special treatment for certain murder victims is nothing new, nor is it unique to DC. David Simon devoted several pages to the concept in Homicide

  13. She actually *is* more important -- as a PR tool likely to generate some positive make-up press. You have to deal with the most obvious, glaring, much-trumpeted mistakes first. (With a bit of luck, she's also dealing with the other mistakes in some fashion.)

You have to be seen taking responsibility for the mess. You have to address the most visible past failures in a public way in order to rebuild confidence in the system. That doesn't mean she shouldn't do the other stuff, but it's less likely to get covered than Fox News' "little lost blond girl" of the month.

  14. this criticism is legit if the chief is refusing to meet the mothers of other victims. but do you even know if the other families have asked the chief for a sit-down? i bet not.

i congratulate the chief for not letting one slip through the cracks.

  15. Condit didn't do it, and it's important to establish who did so his name can be cleared. His life has already been ruined, but it would be nice to have this settled.

  16. Sorry, but I have to point out that she was sleeping/hanging with the very married Gary Condit and digging on DC politics...and posing for glamour shots...how lame...I'm sorry she's dead, but have to point out this was one wasteful and depressing way to spend your youth...I feel sorry that that is how she spent her last days...Yuck!!!!!
