Shocking

I have some shocking news. Everyone sit down for this. DC's tap water is polluted to the point where it could be causing low birth weight and birth defects.

*GASP!*

If it's not lead it's something else. This time it's chlorine pollutants. It seems that DC has been working so hard to clean the city's drinking water that they went a bit too far. The end result is the same: we are being poisoned.

WASA's head is wedged in the sand:

WASA General Manager Jerry N. Johnson did not respond to calls for comment. His spokesman, Michele Quander-Collins, said WASA's testing shows acceptable levels of disinfection toxins in the water supply in every monthly test this year.

"The byproduct levels we test for at eight EPA-approved locations have been well within EPA parameters," she said. "Our tests don't show high levels."

Just like your tests don't show broken fire hydrants? Ask a Georgetown librarian how those tests went. I swear to God, a little part of me dies everytime I pay a utility bill to these incompetent fucks.

Washington Aqueduct General Manager Thomas P. Jacobus pointed out that the testing was done after a "chlorine surge" to clear out DC's sewers of any grossness. Since the EPA averages every monthly sample, on the whole, the water is safe. Well, color me unimpressed. I'm psyched that the water is usually within EPA parameters. However, at one point, there was a two in five chance that I was drinking something unacceptably harmful to my body (note: things like alcohol and cream soda are acceptably unhealthy). That doesn't make me sleep any better at night.

And apparently our Brita filters won't protect us either:

"THMs are a group of organic chemicals, which are suspected of being carcinogenic. They are formed in water when chlorine being used as a disinfectant reacts with natural organic matter (such as humic acids from decaying vegetation). Studies have linked one specific by-product, called trihalomethanes or "THMs" to a significant increase in the risk of miscarriage in pregnant women who drank five or more glasses of unfiltered tap water a day. Brita, however, does not filter THMs out of tap water."

  2. That's why I've got me an everpure filter...pretty much a necessity here in DC. Plus it's got a 300-gallon capacity, meaning you only need to change it about once a year.

DC is shit. That is why all of the natives who could afford to move out have already left. All we are left now with are a bunch of incoming dipshit transplants who do not know shit about this city prior to moving here. All they know is that living here sounds cool to everybody they know back home. Back home meaning wherever in the hell they came here from. Any wise person with a semi decent education would know better than moving into the DC city limits.
Stupid ass transplants. Any native to this city can spot those assholes from 1 mile away. Their fucked up holier than thou attitudes are a good indication as well. They are the main reason why this city is fucked up now. Drink the water you bitches. Gulp it down like you would alcohol back in your prized prep school and frat boy days.

  5. I personally love it when the water reeks of bleach when I'm in the shower. Even better, I ate at a restaurant the other day and could literally taste the chlorinated aftertaste overpowering my Diet Coke. Thank you for posting this story. I have several friends who thought I was a nut when I said, "It tastes and smells like they are 'shocking' our drinking water like a swimming pool". Oh well - I guess they have to do something, isn't our drinking water coursing through century-old lead pipes anyway? Y-U-C-K.

What else would 'back home' mean?

The transplants are the douche fucks paying the inflated prices while the natives are the ones cashing in and then moving the fuck out. My first unattached home in the district cost me 175k. My ex wife sold it last year for 700k just after our divorce. Eat that you out of towner piece of shit!!!!!

  14. DC Lady: Oh god, not this LNS shit again! I can assure you I am NOT from LNS. I don't even fully understand what the fuck LNS is to be quite honest; not cool enough I guess. And from the sound of it I'd be best to remain ignorant. In closing, I'd bet I'm nothing like you imagine. Just having fun.

To the anonymous commenter above...hate much? I'm sorry you're pissed that your wife got everything in your messy divorce, left your ass behind, and now you are stuck here with us renting losers. Where you rentin'? :o) Also, what does your angerball rant have to do with the poor quality of DC drinking water.

    1) Everyone knows that DC residents are the most unattractive urban dwellers there are.
    2) Only shitheads from shithole towns in New Jersey and PA act like living within the city limits of DC makes you like, totally cool, and beautiful, and stuff.

  23. semi-unrelated/kind of related??:

on the air quality in NYC days after 9/11 -
"the inspector general's report... found that on the day that Whitman [EPA administrator] declared the air 'safe,' the EPA had not yet received the results of the first tests for toxins like cadium, chromium, dioxin, or PCBs."

i dont really know if cadium, chromium, or whatever are bad for you, but the fact the the EPA made a statement before getting test results back is pretty nasty.

    YUCK!
There are people who still drink D.C. water? I stopped drinking D.C. water on a regular basis ten years ago.

BTW, as far as finding D.C.'s Aqueduct, Resevoir or Aqarium on a map, you are not going to find them. The map of the D.C. sewer system was drawn before the entire system was finished. I learned this the hard way when part of the pipe to the sewer main that serves my house broke and raw sewage began to run in my back yard. It took several days to find the sewer main and repair, because the main could not found on the map of the sewer system. At that time I was informed that most of system does not appear on maps.

BTWI, love D.C., But this might be a legitimate reason to hate it.

DC's most contrarian blogger continues to shock and awe us with his controversial, unprecedented opinions! Today, he's against polluted water, and as a bonus, he courageously implies that the DC government is inefficient. This is not the work of some nattering cunt who just makes the most obvious comments on shit he reads on the front page during his commute; no, folks, this is one of the great minds of our time.

Here's the updated list, my friends.

Rusty IS a douche. A quick survey of his blog reveals the following:

    - he plays "Guitar Hero" in public
    - he goes to Adams Morgan wearing a sweater vest and khakis
    - he likes Smashing Pumpkins
    - he reads the Gawker website "Jezebel"
    - he's a virgin
    - he complains about the Metro more than an old Jewish lady
    - he's religious (snicker, snicker)
    - he constantly refers to himself as a contrarian when in fact all of his opinions are painfully conventional and inoffensive. (Ooh, he's pro-"To Kill a Mockingbird", pro-"Beatles", anti-Hummer, and anti-vandalism, anti-poisoned tap water, and thinks the DC govt is inefficient!) (It looks like this list of Rust's "contrarian" opinions may have to be split off into a separate post. It's like a blog within a blog, the second blog being devoted to exposing the pretentious banality of the first blog! Whee!)

All facts and all straight from the horse's mouth. My friends, I think we can all agree that THAT is truly a portrait of a douchebag.
