Why Think When You Can Steal?

Although it's completely unethical and represents a huge black eye for an administration that claimed to have the vision to overhaul DC's public school system, stealing another city's plan word-for-word is probably the most efficient thing that the city government has done since the institution of home rule. Think of all the manpower and cash we saved!

I'm not stupid. I'm aware that whatever Mayor Fenty and his advisers intend to do with Washington's schools is going to be based on something another city has done. That's the way it should be. But stealing? That's another can of worms.

Naturally, the plan we're stealing - obviously, plagiarism is stealing, kiddies - isn't even what made the Charlotte school system the toast of urban public education. We're stealing a plan with unknown effectiveness. And Fenty ran as the candidate with "vision"?

I hope some smartass kid plagiarizes 32% of a term paper he/she found on Google and then points to this when he/she is called out on it. Of course for the DC analogy to hold up the paper would have been graded "IC" anyways.

Well I think it's called "not re-inventing the wheel". Can a plan of untested effectiveness be worse than what we have? Look at all the things that Man has "stolen" from each other over time, bet the expensive private school you went to has some Greek Architecture? Maybe Georgian? Hell your name isn't even original....

My name is original in that it's organic. People started calling me "Rusty" long before I knew what a blog was.

And my private school would never endorse plagiarism. Some deputy mayor shmuck stole the hard work of others. Didn't tweak, wasn't merely inspired, but instead stole 8,000 words. That's impossible to defend.

I have no idea what you're talking about re anonymous comments. My IP address? WTF. Please give me some examples of my mysterious anonymous commenting since I don't do that.

And the hypocrisy of accusing me of commenting anonymously while you yourself remain anonymous is staggering.

  15. This is part of the arrogance of DC and politicians in general. To most of us, solving a problem by saying, "let's look at what other successful people did, and do that," makes a lot of sense. To a self-aggrandizing politician in The Capital of the Free World, all of the attention is on whether what you're doing is New and Innovative and Attention-Grabbing.

Actually, the same dynamic seems to be at work with architecture, which is why we get so many ugly new "cutting edge" buildings going up.

All that said, this is a clear-cut example of plagiarism. The Fenty document didn't credit the original plan in the written document that was sumbitted. It just lifted passages out, verbatim. Not cool. yet the complainers quoted in the article are upset that Fenty is borrowing the plan, not that his plan-writers are lazy.
