I May Need to Exercise More

Since Wednesday, the escalators at the Tenleytown Metro stop have been out of service. Metro is blaming a broken water line. With WMATA's sterling track record, I'm sure the escalators will be back up in no time.

Yesterday, I thought it would be cute to count how many stairs I would have to walk up. I couldn't do it. I lost count around 90. The pain on my thighs was making me delirious. I made it up without resting, but, Jesus, that's a tough walk. And I'm a relatively strong 23-year-old. Let's hope WMATA takes care of this before a septuagenarian collapses from exhaustion and tumbles down a hundred stairs to his doom.

Wow 23 and you can't walk up some stairs?!?! I'd say there's more "relative" in that "relatively strong" comment.

In addition to being a member of WSC, if it were up to him, we'd have thousands of child molestors running around unaccounted for.
    Rusty, are you a pedophile?

I went to that station this morning actually for the first time and even walking downstairs took forever... I think I would have to find the elevator if I was forced to walk back up.

As for the people bitching... I'd like to see them huff up that crazy ass incline.

Anonymous, you frickin' dummie. WSC is a recognized trademark around these parts. Why would you automatically assume it stood for something racist. There's no such racist organization with those initials, you dumbass.

Hindsight's a bitch? What the fuck are you talking about, you retard? YOU are the one who made the assumption. No one else would make that stupid assumption.

WHY would anyone think "WSC" stood for anything racist????!

    Man, you're retarded.

What are you trying to say here exactly, Rusty? Are you prejudiced against Italians? Is that it?!

Because that's what I got from this comment. I mean, that's the leap of logic I took, which I think any normal sentient being would make.

    Am I right?

In the weeks that I've been reading your blog, Rusty, there's one thing I've gotten out of it.

The "take-home" message here is that Rusty is a white supremacist. That's the only logical conclusion to make.

this blog has gone way downhill. james was smart and almost always dead-on in his observations of the inadequacies of this city. rusty is childish and often annoying in his complaints about trivial things.

rusty, big fricking deal you had to walk up stairs. oh my god! i can't believe you had to walk up the stairs! as if this sort of thing never happens on metro! take the fricking bus, man. it's much more reliable than the metro and usually drops you off much closer (and for a dime less).

a "crime emergency" has been declared because white people are being attacked in white areas and all you have to say is "oh no!!!!!! i had to walk up stairs to get home to my ultra-white neighborhood!!! mommy help me!!!!!!!!!"

Rusty has been called childish, annoying, and a racist -- among other colorful adjectives.

    He is also a pedophile.

To all those stating that Rusty is "whining" about this situation... This truly deserves to be in the blog because it is a reflection of the problems constantly plaguing Metro. The escalators have been down for FOUR days now. The cause is due to some sort of water leak. The combined ineptitude of WASA and WMATA should keep those escalators down for the next two years.

To compound the problem, Metro has done little to warn people about the problem. Nothing is posted at the actual Metro entrances. Only when you go down the first set of escalators and finally get to the broken long escalators is there anything - and that consists of a sign made from scribbling on the back of some return envelope, taped to a stack of cones. Customers are not notifed by the train operators that only the elevator is working. They are greeted by a sign after they take the escalators up to the level where the manager's station is. More handmade signs (at least they are large) greet them.

The escalator can only fit eight or nine people at one time and was not designed for high traffic. Those who are unwilling or unable to walk the escalator have to wait a LONG ass time to actually get on the elevator. And don't even think about taking a bike unless you want to be stabbed by the daggers coming out of peoples' eyes.

Rusty - Keep up the good work and don't let these Hate-O-Rade sipping idiots deter you. But get some more exercise - I'm 27 and I run up those stairs.

well, he can't have it both ways. you can't oppose ideas that could generate revenue for metro (such as allowing musicical and other acts on the platforms by selling permits) and then complain when repairs are taking too long due to a lack of resources.

rusty, if it bugs you that much, sell your concert tickets on craigslist for the market price and donate the proceeds to wmata. or write letters to virgina asking them to contribute their fair share to metro.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Of course I can have it both ways. Being against one way to increase revenue does not mean I'm against all forms of revenue. Raise the minimum price of the Metro to $1.45 for all I care.

So you don't have a problem sticking it to lower-income people by raising the fares but you DO have a problem giving lower-income people a chance to make some money performing in the stations?
